How To Pray The Rosary

By Michelle Yau Many years ago, I attended a Catholic mass with a (non-Catholic) boy I was dating at the time. When leaving the church, my boyfriend turned to me and asked why we were constantly changing positions as the priest spoke. To be honest, I didnt have an answer for him. After attending church weekly (or twice weekly when school was in session) for so many years, the words can often become rote, and when to sit, stand, or kneel is almost a Pavlovian response. To this day, I dont know the reason behind all of the motions, but in spite of attending various churches over many years, the movements have been consistent in all of them. Many of the Catholic practices have evolved over time, and how to pray the rosary is one example. Most Catholics believe that the Rosary prayer originated when the Virgin Mary appeared before St. Dominic (the founder of the Dominicans) in the early 1200s with a wreath of roses which she used to teach him to pray the rosary. Although, todays Catholics use Rosaries, pocket Rosaries, or Rosary bracelets rather than wreaths of roses, the basic form of saying the Rosary has remained nearly unchanged in the eight centuries since Mary taught it to St. Dominic. Begin by making the sign of the cross (briefly touching the fingertips of your right hand to your forehead, the center of your chest over your heart, your left shoulder, and finally your right shoulder while reciting, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”) Next Recite the Apostle’s Creed. I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth Of all that is seen and unseen. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. Who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit And born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again, He ascended into heaven And is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, The holy Catholic Church, The communion of saints, The forgiveness of sins, The resurrection of the body, And life everlasting. Amen The Apostles Creed is followed by the Our Father prayer Our Father who art in Heaven Hallowed be Thy name Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done On earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our trespasses As we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation But deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours Now and forever. Amen After saying the Our Father once, recite the Hail Mary prayer three times. Hail Mary full of grace The Lord is with Thee. Blessed are Thou amongst women And blessed is the fruit of they womb, Jesus Holy Mary, mother of God, Pray for us sinners Now and at the hour of our deaths. Amen Follow this with a single recitation of the Glory Be to the Father prayer. Glory be to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit As it was in the beginning, Is now and ever shall be World without end. Amen After these prayers are said at the beginning, the following prayers are repeated for each of five decades. Recite the Our Father prayer once, followed by the Hail Mary prayer ten times, and the Glory Be to the Father prayer. Although these prayers can be said without accompaniment, most Catholics use a Rosary, Rosary bracelet, pocket Rosary, or Rosary ring to track the prayers on the beads while praying. Rosaries, pocket Rosaries, and Rosary bracelets are offered in a large variety of materials ranging from inexpensive plastic and string beaded rosaries to more ornate designs which incorporate lampwork glass beads, Swarovski crystals, and gemstones such as black onyx or amethyst. Psychographic You can also choose to segment the parents according to the number of children they have. Geographic This is simple. You segment your market according to where they stay or where they work. Behavioristic You segment your market according to their purchasing power. After you have successfully segmented your market, you need to select the right segment targeting. For simplicity sake, lets say we choose to segment our market by geographic region. After segmenting the parents according to where they stay/work, we choose to target at parents staying / working at Town A. Before you start marketing to parents staying / working in Town A, you need to consider a few criterias. Is the segment viable and sustainable? Can we make a profit from it? Is the segment accessible? How easy is it for us to reach the segment? Is the segment measurable? Are we able to obtain realistic data to consider its potential? Someone you fairly trust, like a friend or cousin, asks you to co-sign on a loan. They assure you that the loan will be paid on time and in full. You are a nice person and sign the papers. And then end up on Judge Judy or People’s Court. Co-signing a loan comes with a lot of risks. You need to know them before you turn a personal relationship into a business one. Studies show that of all the co-signed loans that go into default, as many as three out of four co-signers are held responsible for the loan. That means that you have a 75% chance of having to pay the loan if your friend or relative doesn’t. Keep in mind that your friend or relative probably asked you to co-sign because he or she doesn’t have the necessary credit required to get a loan. It doesn’t really matter why the credit isn’t there, it could be a lack of history or poor repayment history, but the most important thing is that the lender considers the borrower too much of a risk. Think about that risk. In fact, if you have good credit, the lender will probably come after you before going after the borrower. By Jeffrey Hauser Im a survivor. No, I dont have a yellow ribbon on my lapel or a group that meets every Thursday night. Instead, I have a twenty-one year old daughter. And in order for her to have achieved that number, she and I had to go through her teenage years. Its what I affectionately call, the Seven Years of Hell. Not that all of it was bad, mind you, because it wasnt. But, like a malignant fungus, it began slowly and kind of crept up on my wife and myself. I tell you how it affected me during that period. Two words: Oh, My God! You see, now I cant even count anymore. It began innocently enough. The day my daughter turned thirteen, I hid in the closet waiting to see what I had created. After a few hours of waiting, I realized that things appeared normal. So I went back to my routine and monitored her progress. It took months before I noticed any signs of the transformation as I like to call it. It happened one Sunday when she was doing her homework. She was working a math problem for beginning algebra and said, Whats an invisible number? I looked at her quizzically and replied, Im not sure. She gave me the strangest look and then hung her head. You mean you dont know everything? she asked in amazement. I shook my head and admitted to the failure. From that day forward, the spiral of agony began. No longer did she consult me regarding every aspect of her life. I wasnt the all-knowing guru she clung to before. Rather, she began to ask her friends for advice. Now thats a scary thought in itself. But they were more than happy to tell her all they knew about every subject. Eventually, I would discover the wealth of totally absurd facts they exposed whenever approached. Lincoln was the first president, or was it Franklin? The capital of Europe is Paris. You can get a fake ID over the Internet. Good stuff like that. As she and I aged together, the rift grew wider. Not only was I getting dumber by the hour regarding schoolwork, I couldnt be relied on for any of the right answers. She would ask to stay out later, or skip a class. When I gave a negative response, I was (a) unfeeling, (b) out of touch with what was going on, (c) not being fair, or (d) all of the above. What was I thinking? I tried to think back to my teenage years but it was an unfair comparison. We didnt have (a) cell phones with text messaging, (b) cable tv, (c) computers or the Internet, (d) microwaves, (e) fax machines, or (f) credit cards and practically no money whatsoever. This generation was techno-charged and I was a dinosaur from the black and white television age. Geez. Once she got her first car, I rarely saw her unless she needed money, food, or something was broken. We got her the requisite cell phone and credit card. They were for emergencies, we explained. She decided that emergency meant any time she had to call anyone on earth or had to buy anything at anytime for any reason. The battle lines had been drawn. We spent the next few years fighting over her curfew, spending habits, friends with various addictions, and our behavior. There were always issues about our behavior, not hers. We were the unyielding parents that didnt understand her. The problem was, we did, and were constantly expressing ourselves. What were we thinking? The nerve of us actually questioning her judgment? Surely, we could recognize the vast unlimited experience and knowledge of someone who had been on this earth a whopping seventeen years! She was now the expert on practically everything and we had undergone totally lobotomies. Our minds were virtual mush and unable to perceive her brilliance. It was quite obvious we were now to be on the losing end of every discussion. Toward the end of the teenage reign of terror, the wars were conducted with less frequency and we somehow regained partial use of our brains. She decided that we still knew a few basic things and didnt always question our decisions. Harmony crept back into our relationship as the birds sung and the crickets chirped once again. Now life is good and we got along perfectly. Did I mention that she moved out on her own at eighteen to go to college? Now I wonder if that had anything to do with it. Depression: Can Dolphins Relieve Depression Symptoms?

Swimming with dolphins can be an effective therapy for depression according to a research carried out in Honduras. It was known that these animals had healing properties for other diseases but not alleviating depression. Under support of biophilia theory, which shows how human health and wellbeing are dependent on our relationships with the natural environment, the research showed that swimming with dolphins is an effective treatment for mild to moderate depression. According to the British Medical Journal a randomised controlled study of animal facilitated therapy with dolphins in the treatment of depression. The study was performed in Honduras with 30 patients diagnosed with mild or moderate depression. 50 per cent of them were assigned to the experimental group and the other 50 per cent to the control group. Patients of the experimental group swam and snorkelled in the water with dolphins for one hour a day during a two-week period. Meanwhile, partients of the control group exercised the same water activities, but without dolphins, in order to control the influence of water and the natural setting. Antidepressant drugs or psychotherapy were discontinued for all patients at least four weeks before the research and they were also not allowed to take drugs during the study. The average severity of the depressive symptoms was more reduced in the experimental group than in the control group. The experts that led the study stated that effects caused by the animals were significantly greater than those of just the natural setting. They also explained that the emotions raised by the interaction with dolphins may explain the mammals healing properties. Participants from both groups reported lasting improvement and did not require treatment even three months after the study. One of my colleagues worked on a lookout tower, in radio range of a radio telephone repeater tower. So he could use a radio telephone, and free up more of the Forest Service frequency that I used. His radio telephone was about the size of a lap top. Cell phones are really down-sized radio telephones. The advantage cell phones have today, over the old Radio telephone, is that they are much smaller and easier to use than the old radio telephones. Cell phones use very little battery power compared, to a radio telephone. This fact has helped the cell phone designers reduce their size to that of an object that can fit in your pocket. The radio telephone was big and had to have a very powerful radio signal to reach the few radio towers that existed. The radio signal it transmitted had to be powerful enough to reach a tower 40 or 50 miles away. Cell phones today are much smaller, and easier to use. Both people on a cell phone call can talk at once. Both listen at the same time. When using a radio telephone, only one person can talk at a time, while the other person can only listen. Since there are many cell towers in the system, many more people can use cell phones, than could use the old radio telephones. Radio telephones only had about 25 frequencies, available to use. Today each cell has about 56 voice channels available. The cell phone system is divided into small cells, which allows greater frequency reuse in an area, so that millions of customers can use cell phones at the same time. Today modern cell phones can communicate on 1,664 frequencies or more! Each cell occupies about 10 square miles. There can be 56 people talking on their cell phone at one time within the area of a cell. The cell phone uses a much less powerful radio signal than a radio telephone. The larger number of cell phone towers makes this possible. Another advantage of using a low power radio signal of 3 watts is that it fades to near nothing past the edge of the cell; so the same frequencies can be reused in the neighbouring cells. As you travel you are switched automatically from the cell tower you are moving away from to the next best located tower in the area you are going toward. As you travel your cell phone sends out a code signal which identifies itself, you the user, and the service provider. Your cell phone is always communicating with the cell tower and its service provider. This is done to keep track of which cell it is located in, how strong the signal strength is received, and transmitted, and to determine if the cell you are in, is owned by your provider, or another company.
