Diaries and Letters

June 22nd, 2008 by keltoumayerneni

By Nick Grbin If youre lucky, you may have found or inherited a diary or your ancestors letters. How many movies have been made by peoples personal diaries? For example, Anne Franks horrific account of the holocaust! Diaries can be rich in information and fascinating. Most diaries are either in a bound book or some kind of notebook. Letters can also be rich in information and history. Dates and addresses are crucial to the genealogist. They can place your ancestor in a certain time and place in history. Never separate the letters from the envelope or give the envelope to stamp collectors. Often a postmark may be the only clue to the date of the letter and your ancestors place of residence. Letters that have multiple pages should never be separated. It is vital to preserve their page order. Some letters have funeral notices or newspaper cuttings. They are usually vital to your research. Sometimes reading the handwriting of diaries and letters is difficult. Dont get discouraged. Its interesting how soon you can get use to peoples handwriting. The key here is to persist and dont give up. Often you can find someone in the older generation that is familiar to that style of writing. Seek them out. You could be pleasantly surprised. Dont skimp on any details, or you could miss some vital clues. Think like a detective. It works! An abbreviation in one letter may be spelt in full in another. A name beginning with G may be spelt in full or more easily readable in another letter or diary page. Now that you have identified family names, make notes. Interview other family members that may know something. If you have a computer and scanner, scan some important pages and email sections of the document to others to help you identify people and places. Start searching records such as census, heritage records, birth death & marriages and so on. Diaries and letters can enable you to do some detective work. It could open up new lines of ancestry you never knew existed. Enjoy! http://www.genealogy4beginners.com Nick Grbin is the webmaster of genealogy4beginners The web site outlines a Genealogy Ebook that saves time, effort and money researching your Ancestors, You can subscribe to the FREE Family History for Beginners Newsletter with great tips & information. Bias Towards Mother in Divorce Cases No Longer Applies

June 19th, 2008 by keltoumayerneni

By Sara Goldstein In Colorado divorce law, lawyers are noticing a rising trend against preferential treatment towards the mother. In previous years, there used to be a bias in favor of a mothers parental rights during and after a divorce. Thats no longer the case, according to the Arvada-based law firm of Hull & Zimmerman. Rather, the new trend of child custody centers around the concept of the childs best interest. In most cases of divorce, the court bestows custodial parent status on one parent and visitation parent status on the other. The custodial parent is the primary caregiver, and the visitation parent is the one with visitation rights. In legal terms, these visitations are called parenting time and typically take place on weekends, alternate holidays, etc. In previous years, it was often the mother who was granted custodial parent status. Now, however, this status is determined on an individual basis, and gender is no longer as important as it once was. While everyone wants an amicable divorce, unfortunately thats not always the case. Which is why experts recommend hiring an attorney. Proper, qualified legal representation can help ensure that the childs best interests are protected. For instance, if one parent has an attorney, but the other does not, the latter parent is at a great disadvantage when it comes to negotiating the legal system. An attorney helps his or her client obtain primary custody of the children. Additionally, an attorney can help that parent deal with any problems regarding visitation rights regarding their ex-spouse. Experts agree entering into child custody proceedings without qualified legal representation often decreases your ability to protect your childs best interests. Diary of an Online Dater

June 15th, 2008 by keltoumayerneni

By Marisa Alioto Just what kind of single woman would attempt to meet a man online? Take it from my personal ad - it’s not who you might think. I’m a 28-year-old, gainfully employed brunette living in San Diego. My passions include my friends, traveling, eating great food and laughing. I am smart, witty and very liberal. Howard Stern is the first thing I listen to on my drive to work, and NPR is the last thing I listen to on my drive home. I’m Italian, and, yes, I do speak passionately with my hands. I dig various bands - and can’t get enough of the train wreck that is reality television. Attractive? Who online isn’t? While I am far from perfect, I can confidently say that I am quite a catch. Yet, I am still single. This could be your lucky day. I started this voyage of online dating after I had mourned my last relationship for over a year. I figured I needed to get back “out there” into the dating world. Meeting single men? Not easy when the majority of your friends are with their long-term boyfriends or girlfriends OR when you work in a female-dominated industry, where the only men around want nothing to do with me: Or any woman for that matter. I decided that in addition to bars and clubs, I had to give cyber-love a chance. I attacked the online dating world much like I would a job interview. I carefully researched sites (and their men) and created profiles accordingly. I found that Match.com and Craigslist provided the best “fits” to my dating criteria. Match.com offered thousands of profiles and pictures to suit different tastes, while Craigslist, an online classified community, discreetly offered offbeat personals at no cost. My first dates were nerve-wracking, but with time and practice, they got better. My shortest date was 45 minutes, which included dinner, while my longest was 16 hours. I met men who challenged me and my ideals, men who excited me and men who bored the living hell out of me. The dating process, also known as the “weeding out process,” exposed me to the good, the bad and the sometimes ugly. Whether you are a seasoned cyber-dater, or just breaking into the world of online dating, here are some tips to consider when searching through the testosterone-laden dating websites to meet a quality guy, if he even exists. Use common sense and trust your judgment. Be sure to exercise common sense when first communicating with your potential suitors because they are strangers! Meet in public places, bring a cell phone and let a friend know where you’ll be meeting someone. Use good judgment - if you have a bad feeling, it’s probably well-founded, so follow your instincts. Be selective. You are fabulous and you will be flooded with responses from potential suitors. Remember who you are and don’t lower your standards for anyone - you deserve nothing but the best. It’s easy to be too “nice” and continue to see or correspond with someone who truly is not a viable match. Do yourself (and him!) a favor and nip those situations in the bud before it becomes awkward. Go into every date with an open mind. Maybe you will meet the man of your dreams, or maybe you will meet the biggest loser on the planet. Either way, you will gain experience and learn more about the men you hope to meet (or never again see) in the future. While you should always maintain high standards, setting too many expectations will take away from the date. Relax, go with the flow and enjoy yourself. Be yourself. There’s a reason why people want to meet you: Because you are an amazing woman! While this is a simple piece of advice, so many times we try too hard to be the person we think others want us to be. Do you really want to date someone who doesn’t know the real you? Be yourself, whether it’s in describing yourself in your personal ad, over email communication or on your first date. Find an online dating site that works for you. Not all dating websites are a perfect fit for everyone. You may need to experiment with a variety of sites before finding one that is a match. Don’t take things personally. Not every date is going to be a perfect fit. Remember the saying: “You have to kiss a lot of frogs before you meet your prince?” Keep that in your back pocket while experimenting with online dating. You will meet the amazing and the not-so-amazing, so when things don’t work out, assess and move on. While I haven’t yet met the man of my dreams, online dating has been a worthwhile adventure. I’ve learned a lot about myself, which has unexpectedly become my success story in this sea of experiences. And am I finished experimenting? Not even close. Thermal Mass - A Basic Understanding of How it Can Affect Your Home

June 7th, 2008 by keltoumayerneni

By Brendan Hogg Thermal mass is a specific material’s ability to absorb heat energy. A great deal of “heat energy” is needed to modify the temperature of a high density material such as concrete, therefore it is said to have “high thermal mass”. Timber is said to have ‘low thermal mass”. Timber is a fairly lightweight material. Energy efficient homes consist of a simple design with maximum usage of natural energy sources to gain a high degree of comfort. What truly sets a passive design home apart from a standard tract home is thermal mass. If solar heat is to be used when the sun is not shining, excess heat must be stored. Everyone has leaned against a sun-warmed brick or stone. It’s warm and comfortable and takes a while to cool off. That’s thermal mass. Thermal mass is simply a solid or liquid material that will absorb and store warmth and coolness until it is needed. Acting like a battery, thermal mass keeps the home comfortable by absorbing heat during summer and storing it for gradual release when it’s cold. In winter, thermal mass absorbs heat by direct sunlight. At night the process is reversed as thermal mass gives up heat, warming the room by radiation, convection and conduction. In the summer, thermal mass should be shaded so it draws the warmth from the surrounding air and cools the room. The greater the area of thermal mass, the greater its ability to store heat and maintain a uniform temperature. How thermal mass is used in a passively designed home is the owner’s choice. Thermal mass in the form of concrete, masonry or water has a much better storage capacity for heating and cooling than does the surrounding air. That’s why thermal mass acts to prevent large changes of indoor temperature as the outdoor temperatures rise or fall. The use of heavyweight construction materials with high thermal mass (for instance a concrete slab on the ground and insulated brick cavity walls) can reduce total heating and cooling requirements by up to 25% when compared to a home built of low thermal mass, e.g. lightweight construction materials of brick veneer with a timber floor. The benefits of thermal mass depend on where the structure is located, how it is designed and how it is operated. But correctly done it can make a significant difference to comfort, and heating and cooling bills by averaging out highs and lows of temperature over a 24 hour period. In climates where there is a big difference between extreme heat and cold, thermal mass is very important, but less important, none-the-less has some benefit, in lower summer temperature areas. However in areas where access to the sun is limited, thermal mass could actually exaggerate the temperature peaks and troughs. It’s placement depends on what its main function will be. If cooling is a priority it must be protected from the summer sun and exposed to cooling night breezes. If heating is the main need, it must have access to winter sunshine. Generally thermal mass does not work in tropical climates, but is extremely effective in most other conditions. Author: Brendan Hogg. Brendan is Manager of Cardiffair Natural Cooling Fans. How To Recognize an Essential Oil?

June 1st, 2008 by keltoumayerneni

By Nitin Jain A selection of essential oils is now available from health food shops, chemists and by mail order. When you are buying them, be careful to choose essential oils, not perfumed oils. Although these may well smell delicious they are not benefecial for aromatherapy. An essential oil is: Thin and watery rather than oily. Swift to evaporate and it wont leave a greasemark on paper. Overpoweringly scented when neat, which can be quite unpleasant. Perfumed oils will always smell pleasant whereas essential oils often have more of the effect of smelling salts. All essential oils fall into three basic categories: TOP NOTES : These oils evaporate very quickly. They are generally uplifting and stimulating, with a greenish, fresh aroma. MIDDLE NOTES : These are used to help with most bodily functions and the body;s metabolism. BASE NOTES : These are extremely relaxing, sometimes sedative and generally have a lovely, warm aroma. You’ll notice essential oils are always sold in tinted glass bottles (if not, be suspicious). This is becaiuse they are special oils that need a little care. They are damaged by light and should always be stored in a dark, cool place. Be careful to keep the lids tightly screwed on your bottles, otherwise you will be disappointed to discover your oils have evaporated into thin air. How to Create a North Carolina-Themed Gift Basket

May 29th, 2008 by keltoumayerneni

By Wendy Wood In the Southeastern part of the United States, North Carolina sits along the Atlantic Seaboard. As one of the original Thirteen Colonies, the state served as home to the first established English colony in the Americas. Many firsts continued to flourish in North Carolina, including the Wright Brothers succeeding in their earliest flight at Kill Devil Hills, located close to Kitty Hawk. Today, tourists encounter mountain ranges, humid temperatures, and close connections with the film industry. While California and New York seem to monopolize all of the attention when it comes to the movie world, did you know that North Carolina is the third largest film production state? Throughout the North Carolina, film studios situated in Asheville, Wilmington, Durham, Raleigh, Shelby, and Charlotte, crank out some of the most well known flicks to hit the movie theaters. Some gift basket ideas to create may highlight some of the films shot in the state, such as the baseball-inspired Bull Durham basket; snacks and activity basket in honor of Cabin Fever; and a scented candle assortment to pay homage to Stephen King’s Firestarter. Additional movies filmed in the area include Dirty Dancing, The Crow, Cape Fear, Shallow Hal, as well as the popular teen TV show titled Dawson’s Creek, which would make the perfect Teen Angst gift basket filled with acne products, and bath and cosmetic selections. North Carolina also houses a serious assortment of higher education institutions, where gift baskets showcasing the popular schools of the area are sure to please both the beaming parent and the studious attendee. Make sure you have enough colorful ribbons, bows, and accents that correspond to following notable colleges and universities in the area: Duke University (Duke blue and white); Wake Forest University (Old Gold and black); Davidson College (red and black); and North Carolina State University (red and white). State symbols can help a gift basket creator find new and exciting ways to make arrangements. In the case of North Carolina, you may want to utilize the cardinal (state bird); the dogwood (state flower); the emerald (state gem); milk (state beverage); the sweet potato (state vegetable); as well as the strawberry and blueberry, which serve as state berries. Pine scented candles and incenses could be used to fill a gift basket that pays tribute to the state tree. The Eastern Grey Squirrel, which is the state mammal, may present an entertaining companion for a stuffed animal choice filling a gift basket geared towards kids. The European honeybee serves as the state insect, which allows gift basket makers to play with the theme of honey. Auto Refinance Secrets: Refinance Your Car Loan and Save Every Month

May 26th, 2008 by keltoumayerneni

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Christopher_Luck]Christopher Luck Refinancing your auto loan can be a easy and effective way to lower your monthly payments and save you a good deal of money in the long term. Huge numbers of people are taking advantage of refinancing in the face of much lower interest rates. If you think you are paying way too much money on your loan each month (and who doesnt?) then based on the amount of time left on your lease, and the rate of the interest you signed at, refinancing may be the way to go. Its always frustrating when you sign on to a loan at a fixed interest rate and then see the interest rates steadily drop around you, while youre still stuck with the forking out the same high percentage payment every month. When you refinance your auto loan, you do so to save money by paying a reduced rate of interest, which, if you still have a few years or so to pay off the loan, can end up saving you a bundle of money. Basically, the new lender takes care of the difference of paying off the original interest rate, while you continue paying the car off to them at a reduced rate. The title to your car is then transferred to them, and the time it takes you to pay off the ever-increasing cost of owning an automobile these days is drastically reduced. It is important for you to be well aware of the term of your current auto loan contract so as to maximize the amount of money you can end up saving. It may be the case that you dont mind making your payments at the interest rate you are currently fixed at, and yet still want to be shelling out less per payment than you are right now. If this is true for you, then your best plan of action is not to refinance your loan, but to extend the term of your payment agreement, so that you can minimize monthly payments. Of course, this means that, over an extended period of time, you will still end up spending a large amount of your hard earned money on the interest rate of the contract. With interest rates currently at noticeable lows, auto refinancing is becoming more and more the wise decision. As it stands right now, if you have a significant amount of time remaining on your loan contract, and you signed on to that contract when interest rates were unfortunately high, then it is definitely worth your time to research and compare the rates at a lending companies, so as to take advantage of getting in an [http://www.springfieldsocialist.com/category/automotive-comments]auto loan contract, while the interest rates continue to be low. Of course, you can research most of this auto loans onlin information, with not a huge degree of effort, and you may just find that is an effort that will pay out nice dividends in the future. If making preliminary calculations sounds like a hellishly tedious mathematical trial, then your best to cut straight to the middleman and talk to a broker who can work to find you the best loan possible. Motivating Shoppers with Online Coupons (Part 2 of 2)

May 18th, 2008 by keltoumayerneni

By Gary Gray Last time we discussed how online coupons and promotion codes can motivate buyers. We discussed examples of coupons and some of the aspects of these offers that can boost sales and generate urgency to a purchase. Today well focus on how to create great landing pages and the use of affiliate programs to further enhance your marketing efforts. Creating good online coupons to offer customers is not the only thing you need to do to maximize your sales. Using an enticing landing page that meets the customer with the deal theyre being offered is also an effective tool leading to a sale. There are two ways that let the customer know the benefit of the coupon theyre using, and both can be equally appealing choices. Option 1 to creating an appealing landing page for a coupon is to restate the coupons terms and offers and to reiterate the promotion code that needs to be entered upon checkout. This way the customer knows they are getting the deal they had anticipated receiving, and makes them aware of potential expiration on getting the discount. As we discussed in our previous article, that sense of urgency is a good way to provoke your shoppers into a buy mentality. Option 2 takes this a step further by automatically applying the coupon at checkout, so when the customer gets to the checkout page, their discount code is applied and actively showing them their deal. This also benefits the customer because they dont need to go back to get the code, where they can be distracted from the point of purchase. By adding something to the landing page like Your 10% coupon code will be automatically applied at checkout in a highly visible area, you are able to keep customers from being confused about what theyre getting. You can also use cookies so the next time they visit, if they remember their coupon, they will be more likely to realize they can still get a great discount. Affiliate programs can also be beneficial when used with coupons to promote your products or sales. New and expiring coupons are littered on coupon web sites throughout the internet bringing more attention to you! Just check out this coupon code homepage for an example of who can be displaying your coupon. In addition, many affiliates will be happy to promote your store when you have a great coupon code or promotion to offer. These high traffic sites bring a ton of added exposure and drive a large customer base of shoppers ready to buy - you know this because they clicked on your coupon! Another secret tip to getting affiliates to put your coupons on their homepage is to increase commissions temporarily upon proof of good placement. Sometimes these affiliate sites can get many more buyers than your own! Coupons have migrated to the web in a big way, and should be a part of any serious marketing campaign. If you arent using online coupon codes and one time deals to promote your site, youre missing the boat on driving incremental customers to buy your products. 3 Resume Secrets the Pros Use

May 14th, 2008 by keltoumayerneni

By Kevin Donlin You don’t write a resume every day. Not even every month or year, most likely. So you can’t be expected to do it flawlessly every time, right? After all, you’re not a professional. Well, I am. My team and I have written or edited nearly 5,000 resumes over the past nine years. And there are a handful of secrets we use to get the job done, and get our clients hired. Now, for the first time, I’d like to share with you three of my proven methods for writing a resume that gets results. Fast. Here they are … 1) Focus on One Specific Job I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard job seekers say, “I want a resume I can use to apply for many jobs, like Project Manager, IT Manager and HR Manager, for example.” My response: You can’t. Writing a resume that tries to be all things to all employers is like trying to ride a horse in all directions at once. You’ll get nowhere fast. Before writing one word of your resume, it’s essential that you first choose one job title or function, such as project management. Then aim your resume in that direction. Every sentence in your resume should try to convince employers that you are the person to hire for that one job. But never more than one. Because you’ll only end up confusing readers with a “one-size-fits-all” resume. And a confused mind will always say no. Which can spell doom for your job search. 2) Use a “Skill Skeleton” Once you tailor your resume with one job in mind, try to focus further and come up with a short list of skills to build the entire document around. I refer to this as a “skill skeleton.” Let me explain. You may be an awesome project manager, for example. But what are the three or four skills that make you so special? Is it your ability to finish projects early and under budget? Your skill at leading others? A knack for negotiating the lowest prices with vendors? These areas of expertise make up your “skill skeleton.” Try to make them a recurring theme throughout your resume. Emphasize them again and again when describing your success stories on the job and in school. Using a “skill skeleton” like this will force you to focus on a core message that’s compelling and easy for employers to remember. And, of course, it should make the phone ring with job offers! 3) Be Truthful AND Believable You already know you must be 100% truthful in your resume — your GPA, actual degrees from actual schools, accurate dates, etc. That’s basic stuff. But it’s not enough for YOU to believe what you’re saying. The employer has to believe it, too. To encourage that, back up the claims in your resume any way you can, using specific numbers, dollars, percentages and dates. Here are some wrong and right ways to make your resume more believable … WRONG”Many years of experience” RIGHT”Seven years of award-winning experience” WRONG”Saved time and money” RIGHT”Saved $437,450 and reduced cycle time by 23 days” See the difference? Specific facts and figures are more believable than generalizations. Always. Every time. For best results, get written documentation for all of your claims, then bring these documents to the interview, where you can expand on points of interest in your resume face-to-face with a hiring manager. Now go out and make your own luck! Kevin Donlin is President of Guaranteed Resumes. Since 1996, he and his team have provided resumes, cover letters and online job-search assistance to clients in all 50 states and 23 countries. Kevin has been interviewed by USA Today, CBS MarketWatch, The Wall Street Journal’s National Business Employment Weekly, CBS Radio, and many others. Stained Glass: The Right Equipment

May 9th, 2008 by keltoumayerneni

By Frank Tobias It’s a common fallacy that in order to enjoy the art of stained glass at home as a hobby, one must make a substantial investment. Though it is true that you will need to make a noteworthy amount of time and resource investment into this activity, as you do with any other hobby, you may be surprised at how accessible stained glass making really is and how you can get by with some basic tools and equipment. One quick and simple thing you can do is buy a stained glass beginners kit if you are just starting off. This normally includes all the bare essentials you will need to get started with your first stained glass masterpieces. Well not exactly masterpieces, but you get the idea. After some practice your skills will shine. Some basic tools you will need include a lead knife, diagonals, bent needle-nosed pliers, flux brush, light table, grinders, and newsprint end roll. As you get some experience under your belt you can acquire more tools and accessories as deemed necessary by you- the master craftsman! If you do your homework earlier on before diving in with both feet, you will find that some of the tools you use will continue to be used by you for many, many years to come. And during that time you will create even more and more elaborate stained glass patterns and materials to either sell, or showcase off in your home. What a wonderful deal! I’ve personally been involved with stained glass for about 14 years now and let me tell you, it still is a treasure to wake up every morning knowing that another concoction that you dreamt up is waiting to be created by your two capable hands and one quick-witted mind! I hope you get to experience the rewarding pursuit of stained glass making with the right equipment. Get started today with stain glass supplies and enjoy beautiful stained glass for life.
